Aluminum vs. Fabric Awnings: Which Lasts Longer?
One of the first decisions when buying an awning is the material: aluminum or fabric. Both have a place — the right choice depends on whether you want permanent protection or flexible, on-demand shade. Here’s how they compare on the things that matter.
Lifespan
Aluminum wins on longevity. Extruded, powder-coated aluminum canopies and shutters last decades with no rust, rot, or fading. Fabric awnings last roughly 8–15 years before the fabric needs replacing, though the frame can last much longer. If you never want to think about your awning again, aluminum is the answer.
Maintenance
Aluminum is essentially maintenance-free — an occasional rinse. Fabric needs periodic cleaning and eventual re-fabricing, and retractable fabric awnings should be retracted in high wind and storms to protect them. Permanent aluminum canopies stay put through the weather.
Flexibility
Fabric retractable awnings win here. They extend for shade and retract to let the sun in or protect the fabric — ideal for a patio or deck where you want both options. Aluminum canopies are fixed: always-on shade and rain protection, which is exactly what you want over a door, storefront, or window.
Cost
Entry aluminum canopies start lower (from ~$800) for smaller units, while premium retractable fabric awnings run higher ($3,000–$10,000) due to the arms, motor, and fabric. Over a 20-year span, aluminum often costs less because there’s no fabric replacement.
