Do Awnings Really Lower Your Cooling Bill? What the Research Says (2026)
Everyone selling shade claims it saves energy. Here's the actual mechanism, so you can judge for yourself.
Heat enters your home three ways, and in summer the biggest offender is solar gain straight through glass. Blinds and curtains fight it from the wrong side — by the time sunlight hits an interior blind, the heat is already in the house. An exterior awning stops it at the window, before the glass, which is why exterior shading is categorically more effective than anything you can hang inside. Research from institutions including Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of Minnesota has found exterior shading can cut cooling energy substantially — with the biggest gains on unshaded south- and west-facing glass in hot climates.
Which windows to shade first
West-facing windows are the worst afternoon offenders — peak sun aligned with peak outdoor temperature. South-facing glass takes all-day load. And any big slider or picture window near your thermostat makes your AC work overtime chasing a hot spot. Shade those three categories and you've addressed most of the problem for the least money.
The practical math
A custom aluminum or fabric window awning is a few hundred dollars per window, lasts one to several decades depending on material, requires no operation, and works during a power outage — which no air conditioner can claim. In Sun Belt states where cooling dominates the utility bill, shading the right three or four windows typically pays for itself in a handful of summers, then keeps paying.
One design tip that matters
In northern climates, retractable shade beats fixed shade on south windows — you want that free solar heat in January. That's the case for a retractable awning over patio doors: shade in July, sunshine in January, your call in between.
