ShadeMaker vs. Awntech Retractable Awnings: Read the Warranty Before You Buy

20 Jun 2026 0 comments

Awntech sits in an interesting spot in the market — a step above the pure import brands, with a wide catalog (Maui, Destin, Key West, Mesa) sold through Lowe's, Home Depot, and its own site. It's a reasonable mid-market option. But two details deserve a close read before you buy, and they're exactly where the ShadeMaker line at 1800Awnings.com pulls ahead.

Detail #1: "Made in the USA With Imported Materials"

Awntech describes its products as "made in the USA with imported and domestic materials." That phrasing is common in the industry — and it's worth understanding what it does and doesn't promise. It tells you final assembly happens here. It does not tell you the motor, hardware, and other key components are American or European. (We wrote a whole piece on this language: "American Assembled vs. American Made.")

ShadeMaker is specific instead of vague: built in Tampa, Florida, with Somfy® motors made in France and genuine Sunbrella® fabricno Chinese drive systems.

Detail #2: The Motor Warranty

This is the one that surprises buyers. Awntech's electrical/electronic components — including the motor and transmitter — carry a 1-year limited warranty. Fabric typically gets a longer 5-year term, and there's been documented customer confusion about whether the motor is covered for one year or five.

On a motorized awning, the motor is the most expensive thing that can fail. A one-year window on it is a meaningful risk over a 15-year ownership period.

ShadeMaker pairs a Somfy® motor — the serviceable, long-life industry standard — with a manufacturer that stands behind the full system and has been in business 37+ years.

Fabric: 5-Year vs. 10-Year

Awntech's fabric warranty is typically 5 years. ShadeMaker uses genuine Sunbrella® solution-dyed acrylic, which carries a 10-year limited fabric warranty direct from Sunbrella. Double the coverage, on fabric that's proven to hold color under Florida UV.

Build and Sizing

ShadeMaker's heavy-duty extruded aluminum, custom-to-size manufacturing, and adjustable front-bar pitch (Helios™) target the architectural-grade end of the market, with spans up to 29' wide and large-format/commercial options (Hercules™).

Bottom Line

ShadeMaker Awntech
Origin claim Made in Tampa, FL "USA w/ imported materials"
Motor Somfy® (France) Imported
Motor warranty Somfy-backed 1 year
Fabric warranty Sunbrella® 10-yr 5-yr
Sizing Custom Catalog sizes

Awntech can be fine for a budget-conscious mid-market buy. But if a 1-year motor warranty and vague origin language give you pause — as they should on a 15-year investment — ShadeMaker is the more transparent, longer-protected choice.
