This is 1800Awnings' manufacturer guide specification for architectural extruded aluminum canopies, written to CSI MasterFormat Section 10 73 16. Text in [brackets] is an option or value for the specifier. Structural design is delegated per project to a licensed professional engineer; load capacities are determined per project, not stated here. PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

  1. Section includes: Shop-fabricated, building-mounted architectural canopies of extruded aluminum, including framing, fascia, gutter, roof panels, support arms, hanger rods, posts, brackets, anchorage, and accessories.
  2. Canopy system types:

1.3 DELEGATED-DESIGN SERVICES

  1. Delegated design: Engage a qualified professional engineer licensed in the project state to design canopy framing, connections, and anchorage to the building structure.
  2. Design criteria:
    1. Wind: ASCE 7 ultimate design wind speed [___] mph, Exposure Category [B] [C] [D], Risk Category [I] [II] [III] [IV].
    2. Snow load: [___] psf ground snow load, including drift where applicable. [Not applicable.]
    3. Live load: As required by the building code for canopies of this type.
    4. Substrate: Anchorage designed for the actual wall construction: [CMU] [cast-in-place concrete] [concrete tilt-wall] [steel stud with backing] [structural steel].
Specifier Note: Brick veneer and unbacked light-gauge stud framing cannot resist the moment imposed by a cantilevered canopy. Coordinate backing or select a hanger-rod or post-supported configuration.

1.4 ACTION SUBMITTALS

  1. Product data: Manufacturer's product data and cut sheets for each canopy system.
  2. Shop drawings: Plans, elevations, sections, and details showing dimensions, profiles, support configuration, drainage path and discharge point, anchorage, and connections to the building.
  3. Delegated-design submittal: Structural calculations signed and sealed by the qualified professional engineer responsible for their preparation.
  4. Samples: Finish samples for each color and finish selected, including woodgrain finishes where specified.

1.5 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS

  1. Anchorage details and installation instructions.
  2. Sample warranty.

1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Manufacturer qualifications: A firm that fabricates, welds, and finishes canopy systems in its own facility, with not less than [10] years of experience manufacturing extruded aluminum canopies.

  1. Single source: Obtain canopy framing, fascia, finish, and support components from a single manufacturer.

1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

  1. Deliver canopies [fully welded and crated] [as knock-down kits with pre-cut, pre-drilled components and stainless steel hardware].
  2. Inspect shipments at delivery. Note damage on the carrier's delivery receipt and report to the manufacturer within 24 hours.
  3. Store off the ground, protected from damage, in manufacturer's packaging until installation.

1.8 WARRANTY

  1. Manufacturer's finish warranty: Five (5) years against defects in the powder-coated finish.
  2. Manufacturer's workmanship warranty: Two (2) years against defects in fabrication and workmanship.
  3. Exclusions: Damage from severe weather, natural disasters, accidents, or improper installation.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURER

2.2 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

  1. Structural performance: Canopy assemblies and anchorage shall withstand the design loads in Article 1.3 without failure, permanent deformation, or detachment.
  2. Drainage: Canopy shall collect and discharge rainwater to the location shown on the drawings. [Discharge onto public walkways and accessible routes is not permitted.]

2.3 MATERIALS

  1. Aluminum: Extruded aluminum profiles, alloy and temper as required by the delegated structural design. Roll-formed sheet framing is not acceptable.
  2. Standing seam roof panels: Interlocking Galvalume (aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel) panels. [Standing seam systems only.]
  3. Fasteners: Stainless steel.
  4. Anchors: Type, size, and embedment as indicated on the sealed delegated-design drawings for the substrate encountered.

2.4 CANOPY SYSTEMS

  1. Integrated gutter-fascia canopy (basis of design: G-Gutter Series):
    1. Fascia: Extruded aluminum gutter-fascia, [6] [8] [10] [12] inches high, with gutter integrated in the leading edge.
    2. Drainage: [Leading-edge gutter to downspout] [Internal scupper and concealed downspout].
    3. Support: [Cantilevered wall brackets] [Hanger rods to wall above] [Posts].
  2. C-Channel canopy (basis of design: C-Channel Series):
    1. Perimeter: Welded extruded aluminum C-channel with integrated drainage.
    2. Fascia height: [6] [8] [10] [12] inches.
    3. Support: [Cantilevered wall brackets] [Posts].
  3. Cantilevered canopy (basis of design: Cantilever Series):
    1. Supported entirely from the wall on concealed structural brackets, with no front posts or tie rods.
  4. Open tube canopy (basis of design: Open Tube Series):
    1. Open extruded aluminum tube framing with hanger-rod support to the wall above.
  5. Standing seam canopy (basis of design: [S-Series, closed ends] [O-Series, open ends]):
    1. Galvalume standing seam panels over powder-coated extruded aluminum framing.
    2. Integrated flashing at all roof-to-wall connections.
    3. Configuration: [Flat] [Pitched].
  6. Dimensions: Width, projection, and fascia height as indicated on the drawings. Canopies are custom-fabricated to project dimensions.

2.5 FABRICATION

  1. Fabricate canopies in the manufacturer's facility to dimensions verified from the shop drawings, to a tolerance of plus or minus 1/16 inch.
  2. Assembly: [Fully welded, factory-assembled units] [Knock-down kits with pre-cut, pre-drilled components for field assembly].
Specifier Note: Welded, crated units install fastest and are recommended for commercial work. Knock-down kits suit restricted site access, upper-floor placement, or freight constraints.

2.6 FINISHES

  1. Powder coat: Apply to 100 percent of exposed and concealed surfaces, including top face, underside, fascia returns, framing, and mounting brackets.
    1. Performance: [Manufacturer's standard powder coat] [AAMA 2604] [AAMA 2605].
    2. Color: [RAL ____] [Match Architect's sample] [Match owner's brand standard] [As selected by Architect from manufacturer's full range].

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

  1. Verify that wall construction, backing, and embedded supports are in place and conform to the anchorage requirements of the delegated-design drawings before installation.
  2. Verify field dimensions and elevations before fabrication.

3.2 INSTALLATION

  1. Install canopies in accordance with the approved shop drawings, the sealed delegated-design drawings, and the manufacturer's installation instructions.
  2. Set canopies level, plumb, and true to line, with gutters sloped to drain to the discharge point indicated.
  3. Install flashing and sealant at wall connections to prevent water intrusion.
  4. Connect downspouts and route discharge as indicated.

3.3 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING

  1. Touch up minor finish damage with touch-up material matching the factory finish, as recommended by the manufacturer. Replace components with damage that cannot be concealed by touch-up.
  2. Clean exposed surfaces in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
