Salt Air, Snow Load, and What Maine Does to Metal
Maine attacks an awning from two directions at once, and most products only survive one of them. Along the rocky coast — Casco Bay, the Midcoast harbors, Mount Desert Island, the reaches Downeast — chloride-laden fog rolls in and settles on every horizontal surface, and it does not need a storm to do damage. A steel-framed awning over a wharf restaurant deck or a lobster pound's takeout window will show rust bleed at the welds inside two seasons, and the fasteners usually go before the frame does. Move inland and the problem inverts. Design ground snow loads climb from roughly 50 to 60 psf in southern York and Cumberland counties to well over 100 psf across the western mountains, the Highlands, and Aroostook County, where Caribou routinely takes more than a hundred inches of snow a season. In between sits the real killer: freeze-thaw cycling. Meltwater finds the stitch line of a fabric awning during a January thaw, freezes solid overnight, and levers the seam open a thread at a time. Do that thirty times a winter and the fabric is finished, regardless of what the warranty said. Add sliding snow off the steep metal roofs Maine builders favor, and ice damming over the shallow eaves on older capes and farmhouses, and you have a fairly complete list of ways shade structures die here.
Our construction answers both halves. Aluminum framing cannot rust, which is the whole argument on a working waterfront — there is no sacrificial coating to wear through and no base metal underneath waiting to corrode. Fasteners are stainless steel at every connection, because on the coast the hardware is what fails first. And the architectural powder coat covers 100% of the extrusion, including the underside and the cut edges where salt fog collects and where cheaper manufacturers stop coating. For decks, patios, and camps we usually recommend a retractable rather than a fixed unit, because a Maine outdoor season that realistically runs late May through early October means the awning should spend the other seven months rolled into a sealed aluminum hood, carrying no snow and no ice at all.
