Three Exposures, One Construction
Massachusetts is really three climates stacked into one state, and an awning has to answer all three. First is snow and ice. Design ground snow load climbs sharply as you move west and north — the Worcester Hills, the Berkshires around Springfield and Pittsfield, and the high ground of northern Middlesex County carry a materially heavier load than the coastal plain, and whatever number your town has adopted is the number your building official will hold you to. The classic New England failure that follows is the ice dam: heat loss melts the pack, meltwater runs down to the cold eave and refreezes, and the resulting ice ledge either loads or releases in a sheet onto whatever is mounted below it. Fabric awnings do not survive that cycle — they pool, freeze, stretch, tear at the seams, and bend their frames. Second is nor'easter wind: not a three-second hurricane gust but twelve to thirty-six hours of sustained onshore pressure with wind-driven rain, a fatigue load that works fasteners loose in clapboard and pushes water into any unsealed penetration. Third is salt. Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Buzzards Bay around New Bedford, the South Shore through Quincy and Hull, and the North Shore from Marblehead to Rockport carry year-round salt aerosol that pits mill-finish aluminum, rusts steel hardware, and creeps under any coating applied only to the visible face.
One construction answers all three. Frames are extruded aluminum, so there is nothing in them to rust. Every connection uses stainless steel fasteners — no mild-steel hardware to bleed rust down a cedar shingle wall or set up a galvanic reaction at the bracket. The architectural powder coat is applied to 100% of every part, top and bottom and edges and hems, so salt has no bare surface to start on. Fixed aluminum awnings and standing-seam canopies are pitched to shed snow rather than hold it, and a motorized or manual retractable rolls flush into its cassette so no fabric is exposed to an ice release or a February storm — which, in Massachusetts, is the correct answer for a deck. We do not publish a Massachusetts wind or snow rating, because your inspector in Worcester or on the Cape wants engineering matched to your site, not a brochure figure. Instead we spec frame gauge, rafter spacing, and the mounting arrangement to the exposure and snow load you give us, and supply drawings you can put into a permit set.
