Virginia is unusual in that a single product line has to survive salt water and hard freeze in the same state. Down on the Chesapeake and the Atlantic — Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Hampton, the Northern Neck, and the Eastern Shore out to Chincoteague and Cape Charles — the coastal counties fall under the wind-borne debris provisions of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, and the loading that actually kills structures there is often not a named hurricane but a three-day nor'easter that pins wind on one elevation while driving salt spray into every joint.
