Wisconsin is not one snow climate, it is several. The Lake Superior south shore — Superior, Ashland, Bayfield, and the Iron County highlands around Hurley — sits directly downwind of open water and takes a genuine lake-effect snowbelt burden that regularly runs past 150 inches a season. The Northwoods around Rhinelander, Minocqua, and Hayward add the cold: stretches of -25 degrees are a normal January, not a record. Door County gets a third problem entirely, exposed on both flanks to Green Bay and Lake Michigan with wind arriving off open water from either direction. And everywhere in the state, the real killer is not any single storm but the cycle: snow accumulates, a thaw partly melts it, meltwater runs into every seam and joint, then it refreezes and expands. The powder coat covers 100% of the surface — top, bottom, and every cut edge — which matters because Wisconsin's freshwater lakes carry no salt, but Wisconsin's road crews lay down a great deal of chloride brine that ends up on every street-facing storefront awning in Milwaukee and Madison.
